Our Mission

Friends of the Borne de Terre Sacrée at Arlington is a trans-Atlantic coalition dedicated to the restoration and ongoing stewardship of the “Sacred Soil Marker” placed by the French at Arlington National Cemetery to honor America’s World War I fallen.

Our immediate priority is the restoration of the physical monument at its original location near Section 18 at Arlington National Cemetery. The original memorial included “Sacred Soil” from U.S. World War I battlefields; as part of our project, a delegation of American Gold Star Mothers will travel overseas to gather new soil for the restored monument.
The monument will be installed and rededicated in July 2026 as part of activities marking the 250th Anniversary of the United States of America.
Once the monument is restored, our focus will shift to organizing appropriate ceremonies to spotlight the purpose and legacy of the monument, and assisting Arlington with the ongoing monitoring, maintenance and preservation of the monument itself.
